That Mountain is one of the earliest works in the Liberation series, created at the start of a return to active art-making and during the artist’s first experience working with oil as a medium.
The mountain embodies the tension between beauty and difficulty. From a distance, it appears lush and inviting; up close, it becomes dense, uneven, and resistant. The work captures the moment of decision — recognising that the path ahead will be demanding, yet choosing to climb regardless.
As an opening work in the exhibition, Mountain speaks to commitment rather than triumph. It reflects the courage to step into unfamiliar terrain, both emotionally and materially, trusting that something different exists beyond the ascent.
